I decided to drive 3.5 hours away and spend a day photographing in Lake George, New York. Why?

I have been in Lake George previously, and it’s a touristy town with a whole heck of a lot of Americana going on. But this last weekend had an extra “oomph” to it: an Elvis Presley festival and an Americade motorcycle rally were both in town!

There was so much “Americana” going on, my head was spinning. I walked around for about 11 hours taking select photos of all the the people and activities. By the end, I had blisters on my feet, my leg joints ached and I consumed eight bottled and canned drinks (Red Bull, Gatorade, water and lemonade to name a few) because it was pretty hot and sticky; but it was definitely worth it…:).

I’m going to start with just street photography here. I broke off the Elvis photos and put them into another post.

While photographing a fashion show at Turning Stone Casino, I looked over and saw this sight. The cameraman was set up to video record the fashion show. It was a pure deadpan, fine art composition to me (having little to do with the actual “content” of the fashion show). So I present it here, separately from the fashion show photos…:-).

To keep myself busy photographically during the cold and “dead” Northeast Winter, I planned and completed three photography projects this past Winter:

  1. Destiny USA: (street photography in a huge mall)
  2. Everyday Glam: (fashion photography with a sense of humor)
  3. Selling Mens Underwear: (advertising spoof and self-portraiture)

After briefly considering doing 3 photography projects per season, I’ve decided against it because, beginning in Spring, I start doing a *lot* more client and event photography!

So, though I’ll still be doing some planned photo projects (I’m sure), the pace will slow down….until next Winter…:-).

Humor in Photography

There are few things more capricious or idiosyncratic than a person’s sense of humor. Not only does sense of humor vary across individuals, it also varies for any particular person depending on their mood and circumstances over time.

Capturing a photograph that *everyone* thinks is funny isn’t going to happen. However, some photos will tend to make a greater number of people laugh. Then again, some of the more subtle or “dryer” photos that make fewer laugh overall, may be a greater pleasure to those “fewer” who do find it humorous.

Humor in photography is obviously a tricky thing and difficult to score big with, short of producing obvious or gross visual “caricatures”.

For those who pursue humor photography from the creation end, however, it can be a distinct and intrinsic (self-evident) pleasure…:).

Destiny USA is a six-story super-regional shopping and entertainment complex on the shore of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York.

When Destiny USA officially opened this year (2012), it doubled the size of the original mall–which was called Carousel Center (featuring a prominent and centrally located amusement carousel)–to 2.4 million square feet of retail space. The mall’s new larger size made it the sixth largest mall in the United States.

Carousel Center/Destiny USA is located on land referred to as “Oil City” due to the numerous oil tanks that used to reside there. Cleaning up the environmental contamination caused by the oil tanks resulted in numerous construction delays.

When Destiny USA was proposed, there were concerns that such a “one stop destination” would kill business in Syracuse’s central downtown area and surrounding suburbs. Despite these concerns, the project went ahead as planned.

In June 2012, it was announced that any further expansions to Destiny USA (including the glass enclosed park, water features, hotels and technology park) were officially cancelled.

From Destiny USA’s Facebook page: “Destiny USA is a destination for local residents, tourists, and travelers worldwide; a place to bring together friends and family for events and entertainment, a place to shop for the holidays, or a place just to spend the day shopping and relaxing. With all amenities provided under one roof, Destiny USA is your destination.”

Gigantic malls are a uniquely American phenomenon and have gone way past being simply a place to go shopping. They’ve become one-stop destinations where Americans can get food, entertainment, and social interaction. No need to go anywhere else! I attempted to capture some of the energy and magnitude of this commercial-social spectacle in photographs.

I get a lot of paid photography work at Cornell University. When I finish a gig there, I usually still have a strong “looking for photos” mindset right after the gig (and of course, I’ve got my cameras with me) and so I end up taking random photos on campus. I decided to start a gallery here at my website where I’ll feature some of these “after hours” Cornell shots…:-).
